Golf Cart Shopping: Choosing Your Features

Whether you are shopping for your first golf cart or your tenth, it all comes down to finding the right combination of features. You have your unique set of needs and preferences, and chances are you can find a vehicle that meets every single one. The key is thinking it through ahead of time, so you know exactly what you’re looking for. Here’s a quick guide to many of the features that you’ll see on today’s inventory of golf carts, from the team at Coyote Golf Cars. We’ve got two locations just north of Tucson, Arizona and an excellent selection of vehicles from Yamaha and E-Z-GO.

Fuel: Rechargeable Electric or Gas

Choosing how your golf car is powered is the primary decision factor. Gas engines have more power, but they require more maintenance, are louder, and are a source of toxic tailpipe emissions.

Electric engines require virtually no maintenance, are quieter, and generate no pollution, but they are less powerful. You have to plan ahead to charge your electric cart by plugging it in for several hours, but it’s a much cleaner process than filling the tank with gas.

Street Legal

Here in Arizona, golf carts may be driven on streets with speed limits of 35 mph and lower. If you plan on using your rig on the street, review the requirements carefully and make sure your golf cart complies.

Headlights, Brake Lights, and Horn

To be legal for street driving, a golf cart must have headlights, brake lights, and a horn.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The default capacity of a golf cart is one driver and one passenger. However, you can buy golf carts that seat up to eight passengers. Some golf carts have a pair of rear-facing seats, which often replace a cargo area. Think about whether you are willing to sacrifice the cargo area for more passengers.

Cover for Sun and Rain

A roof is a very popular feature here in sunny southern Arizona. If you want protection against the heat and against the occasional thunderstorm, choose a golf car with a cover.

Windshield

While a street-legal golf cart is not required to have a windshield, they are a popular feature to protect the driver and passengers from flying debris. Anyone taking their vehicle out on the streets will be traveling at speeds high enough to want a windscreen.

Mirrors

Mirrors are an excellent safety feature that we recommend highly. It’s usually a simple matter to add optional mirrors to a new golf cart.

Radio and Other Electronics

Many folks appreciate having a radio for entertainment and to stay up on the news. Most drivers will appreciate a USB charging port.

Other features to think about while golf car shopping include the quality and type of upholstery and the type of wheels that are suitable for your needs and your sense of style.
